Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive, non-contact imaging system which provides high resolution cross-sectional images of the retina, vitreous and optic nerve. OCT is frequently used to measure retinal thickness which guides treatment decisions. It allows detection of very fine retinal structures and pathology, sometimes unidentifiable on clinical exam. It is widely used in the diagnosis of macular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreomacular traction and central serous chorioretinopathy, to name just a few. Newer generation OCT machines are very fast and allow for test completion in a couple of minutes with no discomfort for the patient.
