Retinoblastoma Q & A

What is retinoblastoma?

Retinoblastoma is a type of cancer that begins in the retina — the area at the back of your eye that focuses light and sends signals along your optic nerve to your brain. Retinoblastoma is a rare type of cancer and is most often found in children. It can affect one or both eyes and can metastasize (spread) to other parts of your body, including your brain and spine.

Like other cancers, retinoblastoma develops when the cells in your retina mutate and begin to multiply rapidly, eventually forming a tumor.

While the exact cause of retinoblastoma isn’t fully understood, there’s a strong genetic component that indicates that the mutations are passed from parent to child. That said, a family history of retinoblastoma doesn’t mean that your child will definitely develop the cancer.

What are the warning signs of retinoblastoma?

Retinoblastoma symptoms are sometimes difficult to notice. One of the most common signs is that the pupil looks white instead of dark when a light is shone on the eye. For example, you might look at a picture of your child that was taken with a flash and notice that one of their eyes looks different.

Other warning signs of retinoblastoma include redness and swelling. Your child’s eyes might also seem to be looking in different directions.

How is retinoblastoma diagnosed?

If you have a family history of retinoblastoma, it’s essential to make sure your child has routine annual eye exams. The ophthalmologists at Retina Consultants Ltd. provide comprehensive eye exams, including pupil dilation and retina scans.

If they find an abnormality, they order additional imagines tests, including ultrasounds, CT scans, and MRIs. Your ophthalmologist might also refer you to a genetic counselor or an oncologist for further testing.

How is retinoblastoma treated?

The ophthalmologists at Retina Consultants Ltd. work with your oncologist to deliver exceptional and customized treatment plans to get rid of the tumor and protect your child’s vision.

Some of the most common treatments for retinoblastoma include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Laser therapy
  • Cryotherapy (cold)
  • Thermotherapy (heat)
  • Surgery
